waterdamageWhat You Should Know About Water Damage

Finding out that there is water damage in your home can be a nightmare. Water damage cleanup is often expensive, depending on the extent of damage it can take a good amount of time before it is all repaired, and it can destroy valuable personal items that cannot be replaced. Water damage can happen in an instant from a burst pipe or it can happen quietly over time which makes it all the more difficult to discover. When it comes to water damage and taking the necessary steps to repair the effects of it, homeowners are usually plagued with questions. At Maven Construction Group, we provide storm damage restoration in Gainesville, FL, along with water removal services and share with you important information all homeowners should know about water damage in their homes.

Residential Water Damages

Don’t Wait to Have Water Damage Repaired

When it comes to water damage Gainesville, FL, homeowners face, the longer you wait, the worse it will get. That is why it is highly important that you look for restoration experts as soon as you’re aware of your problem. Apart from water seeping deeper into your home’s foundation, ruining belongings and even flooding an area in your home, there are secondary damages. Secondary damages occur when mold begins to grow in the affected area. It only takes about 48 hours from the time something gets wet until it starts to grow mold. After that, mold can spread at a vary rapid pace and cause health risks in your home. Mold damage restoration can be costly and it is work added on top of the water damage restoration needed, so don’t put it off.

Polluted Water

Not all water damage that occurs comes from clean water. Sometimes polluted water can be the one that leaks creating health risks. Pollution from water is categorized into three levels. Category one means that the water came from a clean source such as pipes and won’t cause any illness. Category two means that the water contains bacteria and could possibly cause illness if exposed for too long. Category three means that the water came from a highly contaminated source, such as from the sewage, and can cause severe illness or even death. If water sits for too long in your home, even category one water could potentially become contaminated. Never interact with water causing water damage in your home and instead contact a professional.

Water Damage & Insurance

Most people believe that water damage is covered by their insurance and while it may be true, it doesn’t mean that it covers all types of water damage. Flooding, for example, is usually not covered in the average insurance plan. To avoid any issues with insurance if you experience water damage, see what is covered under your plan and what is not. This will also help you file the correct claim so that it isn’t delayed.

Common Areas to Find Water Damage

Knowing where and how to look for water damage may be able to help you find it before it has time to cause serious damage to your home. Be sure to check that all your visible pipes and plumbing are not leaking, if you see any wet spots around them keep a close eye to determine where it is coming from and if it is persistent. Peeling paint or bubbles in paint on the ceiling or walls may be a sign of water damage, this is especially common in bathrooms. Any soft or cooler spots in the floor could also be a sign. If you have a basement that you don’t use often, check it periodically to ensure that there is no flooding.

Plumber or Restoration Company? How to Know Who to Call

Is it a Job for a Plumber or Gainesville Restoration Company?

When it comes to water leaks and other emergencies in your home, both plumbers and restoration companies work to repair the issue and prevent water damage. However, there are instances when a restoration company might be more suitable than a plumber and vice versa. At Maven Construction Group, we provide restoration of water damage Gainesville, FL, residents can trust.

Common Water Issues for Homeowners

  • Leaking Pipes: Leaking or cracked pipes can happen quite often and if not taken care of can cost you a significant amount on your water bill and even cause water damage to floors and walls. However, water leak detection is fairly easy and quick to spot, as well as to resolve, so it is often a job more suitable for a plumber as long as there is no extensive damage.
  • Clogged Drains: Clogged drains can cause water to spill over onto other areas, however, because it is easily noticed it will often be repaired before there is extensive water damage to the surrounding areas. A plumber would be the ideal choice for clogged drains.
  • Leaking Shower Pan: Leaking shower pans are not easily detected and due to the constant flow of water it is easy for water to damage floors and walls. The excess moisture often causes mold growth in the bathroom as well. For water issues involving mold damage restoration, a restoration company should be contacted.
  • Water Heater Burst: A water heater burst can release large amounts of water instantly, possibly flooding the surrounding areas and causing water damage. In this instance, a Gainesville restoration company would be necessary for emergency water removal and to repair the burst.
  • Slab Leaks: Slab leaks can cause serious structural problems to your home if not addressed. They can cause cracks in walls and flooring, extensive water damage to the foundation, mildew and mold growth, and raise your water bills significantly. A restoration company can help repair the leak and address any water or mold damages caused by it.

Restoration Company in Gainesville, FL

What makes water restoration companies different from plumbers is the gravity of the situation. Plumbers stop and repair the source of water loss but do not address water damage caused by it. Restoration companies, on the other hand, use advanced equipment to dry, remove and repair water damage as well as mold damage caused by the water source. At Maven Construction Group, we can also bring in a plumber to repair a leak or other water issue if needed and, unlike normal plumber services, the repairs would be covered under your insurance. Contact us today for all your water and mold restoration services.

New Home Woes: Mold & Water Damage

Make Sure Your Home is Free of Mold & Water Damage

When people move to a new home the last thing they want is to have to deal with pesky repairs. Repairs will take more time, effort and money for water restoration and mold remediation services. The whole point of upgrading to a new home is to relax and enjoy it. But during the chaos of purchasing a home it is easy to overlook serious problems that will soon haunt you. Gainesville restoration specialists at Maven Construction Group share tips on what to look for before moving into a new home to avoid the disasters that are water and mold damage.

What to Look Out For in Your New Home

  • Plumbing: When looking at your new kitchen, don’t just glance over the top, take a look at the plumbing underneath. Check for any leaks in the pipes, water damage to the walls or floor, and any particular humid and foul smells that could be a sign of mold.
  • Vents: Examine every vent in the home and make sure that nothing is blocking the airflow, they are working properly, and that there is no damage or missing parts to them. Any cracks in the vent seals can cause water to seep through.
  • Humidity: It is important to check that humidity in the house is at an appropriate level, especially in Florida where humidity is high even in winter. Check for wet stains on walls and ceilings that could potentially lead to severe damage, condensation on windows and stale odors. Air conditioning units help control humidity indoors so make sure that they are working correctly and are the appropriate size for the home.
  • The Roof & Gutters: Any damaged or missing roof tiles could eventually lead to leaks. Gutters should be in good condition and free from any holes or cracks so they can direct the flow of water correctly.
  • Drainage: It is sometimes hard to tell if the exterior of a home has good drainage, but poor drainage can lead to serious foundation issues. Check that pools of water don’t accumulate on the lawn and that there are no cracks in the foundation or exterior walls. Exterior walls should stay painted and well sealed. Also, minimize the amount of water sprayed onto walls from irrigation systems.

If water damage is left untreated it can cause mold to grow very quickly. Mold is not easily discovered but it can cause serious health problems and mold remediation can be costly. Apart from checking for the water damage signs listed above, it is crucial to have a home professionally inspected before purchasing and even once you’ve been living there to ensure that everything is in good shape. If water and mold damage is found in your home you might be able to file an insurance claim. Maven Construction Group will work directly with insurance companies to deliver an accurate claim. It is also a good idea to look through your home’s contract to see if anything is covered.

Tips to Prevent Water & Fire Damage This Holiday Season

Disasters Don’t Take Holidays — Prepare For & Prevent Damage From Water, Mold & Fire

Disaster can strike when you least expect it, and certain safety hazards tend to spike during the holiday season with so many preoccupations surrounding us. Fire and water damage are two of the most common and troublesome mishaps that occur. The Gainesville restoration specialists of Maven Construction Group would like to offer our advice on how to prevent and prepare for the unimaginable this holiday season.

Structure Fires & Restoration

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), structure fires were responsible for $10.3 billion in property damage in 2015. At Maven Construction Group, we specialize in fire damage restoration to restore your property after a disaster, however, it’s always best to try and prevent disasters.

  • Plug in only one high-wattage appliance at a time to avoid overloading.
  • Do not pinch extension cords between furniture and other tight areas to avoid shock or damage to the wires.
  • Remove any flammable objects on or around a chimney when in use.
  • Turn pan and pot handles inwards to prevent accidents in the kitchen and never leave cooking appliances unattended when in use.

Have A Plan For Fires

No matter how many precautions are taken, it is important to always be prepared in case things take a turn for the worse. According to the NFPA, only one-third of Americans have prepared for a fire by both developing and practicing an escape plan.

  • Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries yearly.
  • Set up at least two escape routes from every room.
  • Designate a meeting area away from any danger.
  • Practice escaping a fire at least twice a year.

Water Damage & Prevention

What is easier than hiring water restoration companies that have extensive training with water damage restoration? Preventing water damage! Maven has the tools and experience necessary to offer cost-effective clean-up solutions due to water damage but we want to help you avoid any unnecessary disaster restoration this holiday season.

  • Clean out roof gutters to avoid uneven spillage around your foundation. This can be done before you hang up your holiday lights or host your annual bash.
  • Inspect and repair any missing or damaged shingles on your roof.
  • Check for any dark stains under pipes, sinks and ceilings that could be caused by dripping water.
  • If leaks are found on water heaters, air conditioning units or pipes, repair them immediately or contact a professional.

Mold Assessment & Removal

Mold is caused by moisture and is often a consequence of water damage. Mold is also a prominent issue in humid climates such as Florida, even in the winter months. Be alert for signs of water leakage, such as water spots, peeling paint, rust or an irregular water bill, that could result in the creation of mold. Maven offers mold assessment and mold remediation services for both residential and commercial buildings.

We’re thrilled to say that Maven Construction Group is one of those businesses. Check out the calendar of donations for all local supporters.

Your home is a large investment for you and your family and you are tied to it both emotionally and financially. Therefore, if something happens to it, it is your responsibility to act quickly and prevent further damage. If you do not, these events can lead to massive damage to your house that can be irreparable or very expensive to fix.

Water Damage

In the event of water damage to your home, identify the source of the water immediately and turn it off. Turn off electricity in all affected areas. If the ceiling is wet, do not use any fixtures in that room. Remove all wet fabric in the vicinity and lift furniture off the ground if possible. While you wait for help to arrive, get rid of as much excess water as possible with towels. Do not turn your HVAC system any higher because you may cause mold to grow. Avoid standing under any ceiling that is sagging and do not rip up the carpet because you may cause more damage. Maven Restoration Group has the tools and experience to help you in this situation. Our team will know how to properly dry your home without causing mold to grow or further damage to your flooring, walls or ceiling.

Mold

Mold can cause significant respiratory problems, especially in pets, the elderly and children. If you discover it in your home, call Maven Restoration Group immediately. While you wait, evacuate everyone from the area and turn off your air conditioning. Do not try to dry the affected areas or disturb them in any way. Additionally, do not use any form of bleach or disinfectant to remove the mold, but instead wait for the professionals. Mold can spread quickly throughout your home in a matter of days. Our team at Maven Restoration Group will contain the spread of mold within your home and disinfectant the area thoroughly so you and your family will be safe once more.

Fire Damage

Regardless of how large or small the fire in your home is, it is vital that you take certain precautions. Attempt to limit the amount of foot traffic within your home to keep soot from spreading within your home. Keep your hands clean and avoid touching upholstery, fabric or walls. Coat all chrome within your house with a light layer of petroleum jelly. Dispose of any open containers of food or canned food that may have been in the vicinity. Make sure you change your air filter as well. Do not use any electronics that may have been affected by the fire or attempt to clean your walls without professional fire and smoke damage restoration assistance. When you need to do laundry, do not send your clothing to a traditional dry cleaners, instead send it to those who are experienced with clothing affected by smoke or the smell may set. Our experienced team at Maven Restoration Group will help you identify which items in your home are irreparably damaged and need to be disposed of. We can also clean and repair flooring and walls the correct way so that the problem does not spread throughout your house.

Storm & Wind Damage

Florida is subject to frequent large, powerful thunderstorms. Large branches and hail can damage your roof, windows and structure of your house. If you detect branches that have fallen on your roof, do not attempt to do any repairs yourself. Wait for Maven Restoration Group to safely remove them for you. If the storm damage is extensive and puts your family in harm’s way, evacuate until we arrive and determine it is safe again. Avoid broken windows that may allow more flying debris to enter. Our Gainesville restoration team members will make sure your house is stable once more. We will safely remove any fallen trees or branches and repair any window, roof or siding that may have become damaged in the storm.

Roof Damage

If your roof has been penetrated by hail, branches or a large tree, it may be able to let water filter through during a big storm. In this scenario, do your best to prevent water from entering your home and direct it elsewhere. If the water is coming through at a manageable pace, keep a bucket there to collect water or place a tarp up there to prevent water from entering. Do not put yourself at risk. Even if you believe you are equipped to climb up on your roof, do not do it in the middle of a storm or you will put yourself in danger. Move to another part of the house that is not affected by the water to wait for the storm to pass and our team to arrive. We will safely remove any debris that may be causing this damage. Our team will assess the situation and make roof repairs if necessary.

Lead Abatement

Lead provides a threat to you and your family, especially children. If you discover lead in your home, leave the area. Leave your home and wait until it is deemed safe to enter. Do not attempt to remove lead paint yourself. Improper construction methods can cause lead dust to move throughout your house, which will affect your health later. Maven Restoration Group knows how to properly remove the presence of lead from your home and will thoroughly clean afterwards so you do not need to worry about future contaminants.

Preparing For Hurricane Matthew

With Hurricane Matthew projected to arrive in north central Florida in the next few days, we know that many residents are looking for ways to protect their properties and families. As disaster restoration specialists, we wanted to offer our expertise as you prepare. We’ve pulled together 11 key steps to prevent damage and handle emergency situations to help you stay safe and secure this weekend.

  1. Be aware of the hurricane’s progress. Stay tuned to local forecasts, storm warnings, and hurricane trackers. By following the hurricane’s progress, you can make an informed decision of whether to evacuate your property, if necessary. Be ready to make this decision if you live in an area that could be flooded. If you live in a prefabricated house that isn’t sturdy enough to stand up to the wind, you should evacuate early to avoid the rush.
  2. Clear weak or dead tree limbs around your property. Loose branches pose a significant danger during high winds, which can blow them down and cause damage to your property. Make sure to dispose of any branches in a closed container.
  3. Secure and clear out your gutters. Hurricanes and tropical storms typically bring heavy rain. Providing clear drainage will help prevent misdirected flooding. Securing loose gutters and downspouts will also prevent them from being whipped out of place by winds.
  4. Shut and reinforce windows and doors. This will help protect against strong winds and rain, keeping the storm outside. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option, though not a last-minute one, is to board up windows with 5/8” exterior grade or marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. If you haven’t done this already, be sure to put it on your list in preparation for future storms. Don’t forget to secure any outside shed or garage doors as well.
  5. Clear your yard, porches, and patio. Make sure to safely store any outdoor furniture, grills, trash cans, bird feeders, hanging plants, kid’s toys – anything that high winds can pick up and use as a projectile. Playhouses, storage sheds, or any other outdoor structures should be anchored securely. If they are not already secured to a permanent foundation, you can use straps and ground anchors to keep them in place.
  6. Locate gas pilots and water mains. You will need to be able to find these and know how to safely shut off your utilities.
  7. Take photos or videos of the interior and exterior of your home and of your personal belongings. For insurance claims, it’s important to create a record of your personal property. This will help assist adjusters in case you need to file a claim. You can also create an itemized list of your furniture, clothing, and other valuables.
  8. Find and secure your important documents and insurance policies. If you don’t have time to access a safe deposit box, try to use a watertight box or make sure your documents are backed up online. If you plan on riding out the storm in your home, make sure you have a “safe room” inside the house.
  9. Put together a disaster supply kit. This kit should include a flashlight, batteries, cash, first aid supplies, and copies of your critical information if you need to evacuate.
  10. Charge your cell phone now. The worst time to run down your battery is mid-storm, after your home has lost power.
  11. Know your local emergency service providers. In case of extensive damage to your home during a storm, it’s important to learn ahead of time who will be available to help. Look for licensed contractors in Gainesville, FL who specialize in restoration and provide all-hours service. Maven Construction Group provides these services to the north central Florida region, and can be reached 24/7.
